Recently, I had the privilege of being a speaker at the Sex and Perinatal Mental Health Conference in Los Angeles, California hosted by Maternal Mental Health Now. As an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist (CST) and Certified Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) specialist, it was an honor to contribute to the dialogue on such important topics. My presentation, titled “Keeping Couples Connected: Barries and Interventions for Sexual Satisfaction in Postpartum Couples” delved into the intricate dynamics of intimacy within relationships during the perinatal period. It also reflected the research I have done towards earning a doctorate in Clinical Sexology.
The conference provided a platform to exchange insights and perspectives with fellow professionals. This enriched my understanding of the complexities involved in supporting individuals and couples through one of the most important, life-changing experiences they will go through and how it can impact their sexuality. I believe that is important to have a forum to open up conversations about these often not-discussed struggles. Having different people share their observations, research, clinical experience, and personal stories can be carried forward by those in attendance for the hope and healing of many more.
Exploring Diverse Perspectives
One of the most beautiful aspects of the conference was the opportunity to engage with a diverse range of perspectives. Speakers from various disciplines and backgrounds shared their expertise, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of sex therapy, perinatal mental health, and couples therapy in Los Angeles. These discussions underscored the importance of taking a holistic approach to address the intersecting needs and identities of individuals and couples during the perinatal period.
Embracing the Complexity of Perinatal Mental Health
Perinatal mental health encompasses a broad spectrum of emotions and experiences, ranging from joy and anticipation to anxiety and depression. As a certified practitioner in this field, I emphasized the significance of providing comprehensive support to individuals and couples navigating these challenges. My presentation focused on common issues couples run into during this time, as well as helpful strategies to foster connection and resilience within relationships.
Highlighting the Role of Sex Therapy
In the context of perinatal mental health, sex therapy plays a vital role in addressing the physical and emotional aspects of romantic relationships.
Couples may experience shifts in their sexual connection during pregnancy and postpartum, necessitating sensitive and informed support. Through my work as an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist in Los Angeles, I underscored the importance of open communication and empathy, as well as mind-opening, skill-building techniques to promote sexual wellbeing within partnerships for parents.
Empowering Couples Therapy in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is a vibrant and diverse community, yet many individuals and couples face challenges in finding specialized support for their perinatal mental health that also addresses their sexual concerns. As a practitioner committed to serving this population, I am dedicated to providing inclusive and affirming care to individuals of all backgrounds and orientations. This includes being LGBT+ affirming as well as supportive of ethically non-monogamous/poly and kinky people as well. My experience at the Sex and Perinatal Mental Health Conference reaffirmed the significance of collaboration and education in creating a supportive environment for parents of all walks of life in Los Angeles.
Promoting Holistic Wellbeing in Our Community
Participating in the Sex and Perinatal Mental Health Conference in Los Angeles was a deeply enriching experience that reinforced my commitment to supporting individuals and couples through their reproductive journeys. By embracing diverse perspectives and fostering open dialogue, we can work together to promote holistic well-being in our communities. As an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and Certified Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) specialist in Los Angeles, I am honored to contribute to this important conversation and empower couples to navigate the challenges and joys of sexual intimacy as they become parents.
